The Hybrid Boom Nobody’s Talking About

Should you jump on the hybrid car wave or wait it out? Here’s my take:

Hybrids were once seen as the bridge between gas and EV cars, but in the first half of 2026 alone, the sales of hybrid cars have risen almost 20% year over year. Their market share now sits at 15.4%, which is almost three times the share of solely electric vehicles.

If you’re considering joining the hybrid boom instead of the EV craze, start by answering these questions.

Why do you want a hybrid car?

If you’re looking to get better mileage, ask yourself if you’re going to use it mainly for city driving or highway driving. If you’re going to be driving on the highway and long distances frequently, you should look at a traditional gas-powered car.

Want a more environmentally friendly car? Let's keep going

Are you in a hurry?

Need a car fast? Leasing is your best first option. Hybrids often hold their value so well that their buyout price at the end of a three-year lease is often below market value, which makes buying out your lease a great option.

If you’re looking strictly to buy, are able to wait, and have the budget, then we can start looking for your model. Now, patience is the key here because it might take a while to find what you’re looking for, but it’s worth it to find your dream car.

Are you looking for new or used?

For used hybrid cars, then I recommend a Hyundai, Honda, or Subaru that is three years old, which should keep you at a budget of around $25,000 to $35,000. If you’re interested in a sedan, then I recommend a Honda Accord, Honda Civic, or a Hyundai Sonata.

If Buying new, I would recommend a Hyundai Tucson, Honda CR-V, or Subaru Forester, which puts your budget around $37,000 to $45,000. If you’re not willing to spend that much right now, wait until more hybrids hit the market.

Are you paying cash or financing?

If you’re paying cash, then you can skip this step. However, if you’re planning on financing, make sure you check with your local credit union to ensure you can get the best rate possible.

Are you flexible with trim (color, features, etc.)?

A strict list of must-have features and colors means waiting or buying new. If you’re flexible on interior color, leather seats, or heated seats then, consider a used model to find a more affordable hybrid option.
